The nutmeg tree (Myristica fragrans) is a tropical evergreen plant that produces nutmeg and mace.

Mace is a red lacy coating (called aril) that contains nutmeg seeds. When the fruit of the tree matures, it splits and produces nutmeg seeds. The fruits are harvested, the aril is removed by hand, and the plate is left to dry outside for 10 to 14 days. The red aril acquires an amber-, yellow-, or orange-brown color when dried, and if left entirely, is called a "blade." The blades are either sold intact or processed into ground spices. Mace is native to Indonesia and is found in some Caribbean islands, especially in Grenada.
