Ghee (Home Made)
Ghee is a healthy fat staple used for centuries that go a long way in Ayurvedic healing besides being a healthy food used as a cooking medium. In recent times the popularity of ghee has increased manifold due to it being used in the ketogenic diet. It is a type of fat that is made by melting butter to remove solids, milk and water thus increasing its nutrient value and flavor.
Ghee contains healthy vitamins and fatty acids that help to build strong bones, improve digestion, relieve inflammation, build a healthy immune system and even aids in weight loss. Other benefits of Ghee are its high smoking point, free from lactose and casein, contains Conjugated Linoleic acid along with being high in butyric acid. Moreover it’s buttery taste help to add a distinctive flavor to food. Ghee is high in fats providing Vitamin A, Vitamin K and Vitamin E.
Making homemade ghee is a very simple process that can be made in your kitchen with minimum of ingredients. The only ingredient is grass fed unsalted butter that should be melted in a deep wide bottomed skillet over medium heat. Allow it to melt and simmer while stirring occasionally with a long handled spoon. It will take about 20 to 30 minutes when a golden liquid will be visible that is separate from white foam at the top and small bits of milk fat that settle at the bottom. Gently remove and discard the foam with a mesh skimmer. Let is simmer until a golden brown liquid is seen but ensure that it does not burn as there are great chances of ghee burning even if it is a little over cooked. Remove from heat and let it cool to room temperature. Spread a muslin cloth in a large mesh strainer over a jar and pour the golden ghee on it. Store it in the jar as it will remain fresh for a few months. At room temperature it will be liquid but if kept in the refrigerator it will become solid. It is recommended to keep the jar sealed tight as it tends to absorb outside flavors. Ghee once thought to be unhealthy has now become one of the seven healthy fats in your kitchen.
