Bitter Gourd Kondattam Online rich in iron and calcium

Kondattam’s are usually dried bitter gourd that is marinated in curd and spices before they are deep-fried in coconut oil. Instead of deep-frying, you can microwave the marinated bitter gourd as this is an easier and faster way of making bitter gourd kondattam that are low in calories. Bitter gourd is cultivated all over the country but it Kerala it is called ‘Pavakka’ or ‘Kaypa’.

Although it is very bitter to taste, it is rich in iron, calcium, and phosphorus having many medicinal properties like controlling sugar levels and purifying blood. The first step in making bitter gourd kondattam is to first cut bitter gourd into thin round rings. Marinate the rings with yogurt, turmeric powder, salt, asafetida (hing), and chili powder for an hour.

You can either fry these rings in coconut oil till golden brown and crisp or arrange the rings in a microwave plate. Now microwave for about 10 to 12 minutes and keep stirring after every 3 to 4 minutes till they turn brown and crisp. Sun-dried bitter gourd also makes an excellent snack. Bitter gourd kondattam go well in combination with hot steamed rice. It is a very popular snack in Kerala as well as in other parts of the country.
